TO OBTAIN A MARRIAGE LICENSE

Both people must appear before any town clerk in Massachusetts to apply for their licenses.

Both must be 18 years of age or older. A good idea to bring your birth certificates with them when applying for the license.

If one or both persons are under 18, a court order will be required.

A blood test is no longer required for a marriage license.

It is not required for either person to be a resident of Massachusettes to apply for a license.

After the application has been made, There is a 3 day waiting period before the license can be issued. This does not, however, include the day the application is made.

The Justice can not perform the ceremony without the marriage license under any circumstances.

The couple can be married in any city or town in Massachusetts.

The 3 day waiting period may be waived in certain cases of hardship, but it would require a court order of the disrtict court, probate court or family court.

Following the ceremony, the Justice will provide a Marriage certificate as proof of Marriage.

The Justice will file your marriage license with the proper officials by the 10th day of the next month.
